I know I’m not the only dog mom who is excited that outside opened up just in time to enjoy Summer 2021.  And while we all are still taking precautions, I know dog moms everywhere will be heading to boozy brunches with the girls, poolside goss sessions and breezy beaches.

And as every sun-loving dog mom knows, the perfect companion to every lazy summer afternoon is a good beach read.  What makes a good summer read you ask?

Something you can lose yourself in.  A book that drowns out the squealing kids or barking dogs in the background.  A story that whisks us all alway to a different time or place.

So in honor of our Dog Mom Days Of Summer seres, here’s my list of perfect summer reads.

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Named as a New York Times Fiction Best Seller in 2019 and 2020, this dual timeline novel follows the coming of age story of a young girl named Kya in the marshes of North Carolina and the murder investigation of a local celebrity.  With just enough mystery and innocence, this story makes for an intriguing read.

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

Recently acquired by HBO for a limited series, this is the story of identical twin sisters Desiree and Stella who flee their Louisiana town after witnessing a horrendous crime.  But their lives are not to remain intertwined as one sister moves on with her life, passing as white, as the other sister ultimately returns back to their hometown.  A great story that looks a race and family.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

Set in Acapulco, Mexico, we find bookstore owner, mom and wife Lydia Quixano Pérez who is forced to flee her home after a chance encounter with one of the city’s most notorious drug cartel heads.  Mesmerizing the story follows the journey of one family from middle-class to undocumented immigrants.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Set in World War II France, The Nightingale follows the lives of two sisters as they struggle to survive during the German occupation of France.  This story of bravery amid tragedy, hope and family was inspired by André de Jonah — a Belgian woman who helped downed Allied pilots escape Nazi Germany.
